The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) has called on the NSW Government to commit to a regular 24-hour Sydney Metro service, following the announcement the Sydenham to Bankstown Metro is opening tomorrow.
NTIA CEO Paul McLeay said: “The opening of the completed M1 Metro line is a significant moment for Sydney and the night time economy.
“From tomorrow, communities from Marrickville to Bankstown will now have a fast, direct line into the heart of the city, and every venue, restaurant and stage along the way stands to benefit.”
The NSW Government has previously delivered 24-hour Metro services during Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and for the FIFA World Cup. This morning Minister for Transport John Graham confirmed that further trials for major events are being considered.
“Our research shows that 69% of Sydneysiders would go out more often if public transport ran through the night,” said McLeay.
“We have proven Sydney can run its Metro all night. The infrastructure is built, the trials have been a resounding success, and Sydneysiders have shown they are ready.
“A global city should not reserve its best transport for special occasions. Our international visitors, our residents and the thousands of night-workers who keep this city running deserve a safe, reliable way home every weekend, not just a few nights a year.”
NTIA said it looks forward to working with the Minister and Transport for NSW on a clear pathway from event-based trials to a permanent weekend 24-hour Metro service, as the next step towards a truly 24-hour Sydney.
