Fiano tipped to be the wine of summer

With summer approaching, Oliver’s Taranga winemaker Corrina Wright is tipping Fiano to be the white wine of the season.

“Fiano has moved from fringe to fashionable,” says the sixth-generation vigneron and winemaker, who has been dubbed the Queen of Fiano for her pioneering work with the variety in Australia.

“It’s perfectly suited to our climate, delicious, and versatile — both for drinkers and in the vineyard.”

With two decades of experience growing this variety in McLaren Vale, the winery is reaping the rewards of early adoption, climate-savvy vineyard decisions, and consumer appetite for emerging varietals.

Australia boasts the largest Fiano plantings outside of Italy, and interest continues to climb. The varietal saw 86% growth in tonnes crushed in 2025 versus 2024 according to Wine Australia data.

Plantings have increased by 318% in the last decade, in South Australia, driven by sustainability, drought tolerance, and shifting consumer tastes toward texture and flavour.

Oliver’s Taranga is doubling down on its commitment to the variety with initiatives such as Fiano Fridays (launched by Cupitt’s Estate), and the inaugural National Fiano Day on 17 October 2025.

“We are all about collaboration and would love to hear from other Australian wineries making Fiano who want to join our Fiano Festa campaign,” Wright said.

Last year, the 2024 Oliver’s Taranga Fiano made a strong impression on critics and judges, winning awards including the Best Fiano Trophy – 2024 McLaren Vale Wine Show.

Described as textured, vibrant, and food-friendly, Fiano is gaining traction on wine lists and in retail due to its flexibility across cuisines and its ability to appeal to a broad audience.

“It’s a sommelier’s secret weapon,” Wright said. “And now it’s making its way into more hands than ever before.”

The 2025 Oliver’s Taranga vintage is ready for release and will be available at www.oliverstaranga.com, independent bottle shops and Dan Murphy’s nationwide.
