Next month, whisky lovers will have an unprecedented opportunity to taste the Glenfarclas 70 Year Old, the oldest single malt Scotch whisky ever poured for an event in Australia.
The Whisky List has organised the event in collaboration with Vintage House, Whisky & Alement, Silver’s Motel Whisky Bar, Whisky & Wisdom and the The Gillies Club.
Taking place this November in both Sydney and Melbourne, the event will see guests experience an extraordinary line-up of classic Glenfarclas expressions — culminating with a once-in-a-lifetime tasting of the newly launched Glenfarclas 70 Year Old, with a value of $40,000 per bottle.
The tasting line-up represents an incredible 152 years of whisky maturation and has been curated and priced at break-even cost – $399 – ensuring the rare opportunity is accessible to dedicated whisky enthusiasts and Glenfarclas fans rather than collectors alone.
With only 262 bottles filled, this whisky is unparalleled due to its rarity and age, with only 15 bottles allocated to Australia.
The two evenings will be presented by Ian McWilliam, global Glenfarclas ambassador and Keeper of the Quaich, who has been with the company since 1991.
Distilled on 20 November 1953, the whisky was matured in the distillery’s traditional dunnage warehouses in Speyside, laid down in first-fill sherry casks.
Glenfarclas Distillery Manager Callum A. Fraser said: “This is true Glenfarclas and this expression captures the very DNA of the distillery.
“What we did 30 or 40 or even 70 years ago is very much what we still do today. The warehouses are still here, holding decades of stories in their walls. At the heart of it all, tradition remains key.
“This whisky has waited seventy years to be enjoyed. Through wars, the reign of a queen and now a king, the world has changed — but this spirit has endured, and it stands as a rare and timeless testament to patience and craft.”
Chairman of Glenfarclas and fifth generation owner John Grant said: “Remarkably, this particular cask has been maturing almost as long as I’ve been alive. Releasing it now marks a true milestone, and one that Callum and I have considered carefully and with great respect for its legacy.”
Co-founder of The Whisky List Oliver Maruda said: “Moments like this remind us why we fell in love with whisky in the first place. The Glenfarclas 70 Year Old isn’t just an incredible feat of craftsmanship — it’s liquid history.
“Bottles like this are usually locked away or sold at auction, but when do you ever get the chance to open one and share it with the community? Bringing that experience to Australian whisky lovers, at cost, is something truly special. Massive thanks to our industry partners for helping make it happen.”
