Entries are now open for the 2026 Nikka Perfect Serve, with Australia’s best bartenders invited to enter the global competition, which tests creativity, technique and the craft of hospitality.
This year’s competition challenges bartenders to translate a real guest interaction into a cocktail, blending personal storytelling with the heritage of Nikka Whisky.
Presented by Nikka Whisky, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, the competition is grounded in the Japanese philosophy Ichi-go, Ichi-e, meaning one moment, one encounter. It encourages bartenders to focus on the individuality of each guest and the importance of delivering something meaningful in that moment.
Nikka Whisky Brand Ambassador Marcus Parmenter said: “What makes Nikka Perfect Serve different is that it looks at the whole role of a bartender. It is not just about making a great cocktail, it is about understanding the guest, adapting in real time and creating something that feels considered and personal.
“Australia has an incredibly strong cocktail scene, but what really sets our bartenders apart is the way they connect with people. This competition is about refining that skill and showing how powerful that connection can be.”
The competition unfolds across multiple stages, beginning with an online knowledge test and cocktail submission, before selected entrants progress to a social media challenge where they share the story behind their drink.
Finalists will then compete live at the Australian regional event at Moondrop, Melbourne, preparing both improvised and signature cocktails under pressure, with three judges assessing flavour, technique, communication and guest engagement.
Last year’s Australian winner, Sydney bartender Takashi Matsumoto, impressed judges with a cocktail inspired by his hometown of Yoichi, demonstrating the power of storytelling and balance in the glass.
Matsumoto said the experience pushed him to refine not only his technical skills, but his overall approach to bartending.
“A cocktail becomes something special when your background, your story and the flavours you love come together naturally,” he said.
“For anyone thinking about entering, if you have a genuine interest in cocktails and bar culture, I would strongly encourage you to give it a try.”
The winner of the Australian regional final will be flown to Japan in November for the Global Finals, competing against leading bartenders from around the world and gaining access to Nikka’s distilleries and hospitality network.
