If you’re a child of the 1980s it’s a fair bet you’re familiar with a wine brand called Blue Nun.
Founded in Germany in 1921, Blue Nun became one of the biggest-selling commercial wine brands during the 1970s and 80s and has sold more than one billion bottles across 64 countries.
The brand played a significant role in introducing generations of consumers to German wine and remains the bestselling German wine brand of all time.
Les Grands Chais de France bought Blue Nun in 2024 and is beginning a new chapter for the brand. The French company has launched a new look for the iconic wine and is hoping Blue Nun’s retro appeal will spark nostalgia in older consumers, while also attracting the attention of younger consumers.
Blue Nun is returning to the UK market with an initial launch of Blue Nun Authentic White and Blue Nun Riesling in a striking blue bottle.
The return of Blue Nun has a few key elements in its favour. Consumer demand continues to shift towards approachable, fruit-forward wines, lower-alcohol styles and more relaxed drinking occasions. With an ABV of 10%, Blue Nun Authentic White offers a fresh, easy-drinking style with aromas of apple, peach and citrus. Its moderate sweetness and lower alcohol make it a versatile partner for seafood, grilled chicken, Asian cuisine and dishes with spice, sweetness or umami.
With a slightly lower ABV of 9%, Blue Nun Authentic Riesling is made from grapes grown in Germany’s Rheinhessen region. This full-bodied wine has a modern, fruit-forward style with vibrant tropical flavours. Its lively acidity and subtle sweetness make it an excellent match for seafood, sushi, lightly spiced dishes and aromatic cuisines, and it also pairs well with summer salads and Mediterranean-inspired dishes.
Its blue bottle is also on trend and follows the success of Vinarchy’s new, very blue wine product—Echo Falls Blue Raspberry. Launched in March, Echo Falls Blue Raspberry was a runaway hit in the UK and quickly sold out at many locations.
UK Marketing Manager for GCF Henry Colyer said: “Blue Nun is one of the great success stories in the wine industry because it introduced millions of people around the world to German wine.
“At GCF, we share the belief that wine should be welcoming, enjoyable and easy to discover. We’re proud to be bringing Blue Nun back to UK consumers and to introduce a new generation of drinkers to this iconic brand.”
Blue Nun is represented in Australia by Swift + Moore Beverages. Stay tuned for details on when the rebrand will hit local shores.
