Elton John launches non-alcoholic sparkling wine

Elton John has launched a sparkling wine alternative just in time for Dry January, called Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs.

Crafted using an innovative fermentation process that develops flavour without generating alcohol, Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs is made from Chardonnay grapes grown in Northern Italy, together with ingredients including green tea extract to add a touch of fine tannin.

The musician swore off alcohol in the 1990s and wanted to create a celebratory alternative to the Champagne for themselves and their abstaining guests.

“Elton John Zero was born from a simple yet exquisite idea – to create a world where every moment of celebration can be shared by all,” Elton John said.

“Our 0% alcohol Blanc de Blancs captures the elegance, effervescence, and joy of a traditional Blanc de Blancs, without compromise. Crafted with care and intention, it embodies the art of inclusion – inviting everyone to raise a glass, savour the sparkle, and share in the timeless celebration of togetherness.”

The musician and his husband David Furnish partnered with Paul Schaafsma at Benchmark Drinks on the project. Schaafsma’s previous celebrity collaborations include Kylie Minogue and Gary Barlow.

As for how it tastes, here’s the verdict from Drinks Business: “A pale and light sparkling drink with enticing fruity-floral scents and flavours of ripe pear and white-fleshed peach, with a touch of pineapple too, complemented by notes of orange blossom and elderflower. While there is a subtle sweetness (35g/l r.s.), the finish is bright, with palate-cleansing bubbles and an appealing note of lime zest, followed by a dry sensation from a touch of fine tannin. In short, this is a squeaky-clean 0% fizz with a sophisticated and appealing personality – there is nothing saccharine or confected about this newcomer to the expanding alcohol-free wine sector.”

Elton John Zero Blanc de Blancs is available in the United Kingdom at Sainsbury’s.
