Homer Rogue Taverna brothers to open wine bar & ouzeri

The brothers behind famed Cronulla restaurant Homer Rogue Taverna will bring another taste of Athens to Sydney later this year with the opening of Volta, a 60-seat wine bar and ouzeri in time for summer.

Located in the laneway next door to their restaurant – which will celebrate its first birthday in August – Volta is set to launch in October.

Walk-in only and designed for casual drinks and eats, the venue will feature a lengthy, curated selection of wines by the glass from Greece and around the world, while ouzo will pour freely from the open-plan, custom-designed bar.

Owners Harry and Mario Kapoulas said Volta will be Sydney’s first ouzeri, with more than 20 varietals on offer.

“Ouzo is Greece’s national drink, you can’t go anywhere, particularly in Athens, without seeing people coming together over the aperitif, enjoying the good life,” Kapoulas said.

“Sydneysiders have gotten more adventurous when it comes to their food and drinks choices, and we think they’re ready for the great ouzo summer.”

Volta – which means “to go out in Greek” – will have a similar industrial and raw feel to Homer, but with an added layer of warmth thanks to textured rugs and mid-20th century leather chairs.

A large communal dining table will run down the centre of the venue, while the relaxed outdoor space filled with crates and other furnishings will be reminiscent of long afternoons in the sun on one of Athens’ bustling side streets.

Kapoulas said Volta will bridge the gap between their existing venues, HAM cafe and Homer, while also giving diners the opportunity to pop in to the bar before or after their dinner reservation.

Volta will be located at 4/3 Surf Lane in Cronulla. Visit voltawineandouzeri.com.au and volta.cronulla on Instagram for more details and to stay up-to-date in the lead-up to the launch.
