Peddlers Gin Co is now exporting China’s first-ever craft gin to Australia. Founded by a group of Kiwi and Chinese friends living in Shanghai, Peddlers Rare Shanghai Gin features notes of Sichuan pepper, Buddha’s hand and Chinese mint.
In 2019 the craft gin was voted the number one bartender brand in China, beating out global competitors and boosting intrigue in trade. It is now officially being served at top tier bars and restaurants around Australia, including the likes of Melbourne’s Kisume, Chin Chin, and Hawker Hall, and Sydney’s PS40, Mr Wong’s and Mrs G’s.
Ryan McLeod, a member of the founding team based in New Zealand, said he is excited to introduce Peddlers Gin to discerning Aussie palates.
“A little over five years ago, we embarked on this wild journey to create China’s first craft gin,” he explained. “Since launch, the industry support and public uptake has been phenomenal, and I’m thrilled we can now bring Peddlers Gin to Australia.
“To be sure, our gin is nothing like you’ve tasted before – it’s a unique yet balanced taste. Expect powerful earthy notes enhanced by aromatic east Asian mint, strongly scented Buddha’s Hand and Sichuan pepper on the finish.
“Perfectly paired with tonic, Peddlers also makes for an exceptional negroni or martini. Ultimately it’s a gin that’s going to give your drink a real kick.”

Peddlers use the London Dry method, which means no additives or artificial flavours are added after distillation. Its use of a traditional copper pot ensures a crisp, clean taste. Peddlers Gin is double distilled, with a vapour infusion of the delicate Chinese botanicals including Sichuan pepper from the mountains of Hanyuan, near Chengdu.
Along with being critically acclaimed, earning a Silver medal from the San Francisco World Spirits Awards and Gold at
CWSA, Peddlers Gin stands out for its distinctive bottle design. Peddlers worked alongside leading London-based agency OMSE to create the apothecary-esque glassware. The elegant bottle is influenced by the spirit of peddling and the legacy of Shanghai signwriting.
