Proof tequila rivals gin among Aussie connoisseurs

If you needed any further proof that tequila is finally being taken seriously in Australia as a premium spirit, look no further than Liquor Loot expanding into the agave sector.

Liquor Loot has traditionally specialised in retail whisky and gin tasting packs, but recently added Tequila/Mezcal tasting packs to its gift box line-up. The packs allow consumers to explore premium spirits without purchasing a full bottle, catering to the burgeoning popularity of tasting experiences.

According to Fortune, global demand for tequila topped US$10 billion last year and will surge by 50% to US$15.57 billion by 2029.

And Australia is now one of the world’s top 10 markets for tequila, with the spirit nipping at the heels of long-term favourite gin.

The Agave Loot Tequila & Mezcal Tasting Pack 2023 features offerings like Patrón Silver Tequila and Olmeca Altos Plata Tequila. The selection also includes aged Tequilas and Mezcal, such as Cazadores Tequila Añejo and Monte Albán Mezcal con Gusano, allowing tequila lovers to dive into the depths of Mexico’s highlands.

When asked whether the tasting kits were proof tequila & mezcal were premiumising in Australia, Liquor Loot founder Joel Hauer said the spirit had definitely gone to the next level.

“We are thrilled to offer this latest addition to our customers and look forward to the new tasting adventures it will bring,” he said.

“The expansion into tequila was the next logical step after whisky and gin. Global demand for tequila has increased over the past few years and we see this demand growing in Australia.

“Tequila has been historically associated with shots or cocktails and hangovers; however, tequila brands have started becoming more premium thanks to education around 100% agave vs. Mixto (a blend of 100% agave and grain alcohol).”

Rum Loot joins the line-up

Liquor Loot has also introduced rum tasting packs. Rum Loot Global Rum Tasting Pack 2023 features rums from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica, Venezuela, and Colombia, including gems like The Kraken Black Spiced Rum and 12 Year Old
Colombian Rum by Dictador.

From the fearsome Kraken to the tropical treasure of Stiggins Fancy Pineapple Rum, it’s a voyage through history, tradition, and flavours.

“Rum, especially in Australia, has often been mixed with cola … which is still a great way to drink rum,” Hauer said.

“But brands like Appleton and Dictator are showcasing their age statements, making them comparable to some of the best aged whiskies.”

The new tasting packs are available in time for the key Father’s Day gifting period at Dan Murphy’s and BWS.
