Reddit has released its 2023 recap, revisiting the year’s highlights and key moments that captured attention on the platform during the year. 

“What a year for Australia,” the team at Reddit said. “First up, the Matildas dazzled in the inaugural Aussie-hosted Women’s World Cup, keeping global fans riveted – even at 30,000 feet above. Meanwhile, a mysterious object found in Western Australia had the Reddit community playing cosmic detectives. The Sydney Harbour Bridge turned into a kaleidoscope of colour for World Pride. Eurovision fever spread to Australia, with Voyager nabbing a Top 10 spot while stopping by for an AMA. Hello again Myf Warhust! And let’s not forget the pop culture twist: the financial status of Bluey’s parents that sparked fervent debate and then the meme magic. Ah, Reddit Australia, you’ve given us a year to remember!”

Reddit’s food and drink communities continued to be vibrant hubs in 2023.

“Yes, the delectable dishes of r/foodporn still have the power to make mouths water, but it seems the tastes have turned,” Reddit reported.

“Forget the immaculate, picture-perfect meals; r/stupidfood reigns supreme in 2023 as the trend du jour and our #1 most-viewed community in the category with a 58% increase in views YoY. Showcasing not the perfect, but the pretty ridiculous; anyone fancy some blueberry beef patties? How about a spaghetti sandwich or a pound of cheese on a burger?

“And how about what the food is served on? r/WeWantPlates is a movement against the gastronomic theatrics of serving food on wood or roof tiles, lamb chops on baroque mirrors, sushi on trilby hats, sliders in a bucket, or fish & chips in the frying pan basket. A community about championing the return to good old-fashioned plates.

Reddit food & drink by the numbers 

Food & Drink as a category was up 26% on Reddit in 2023 for views and 55% for engagement year on year.

In the world of drinks, r/whiskey is up 25% YoY for views, with r/wine on the rise, up 30% for the year.

r/TipOfMyFork, a community that helps other redditors find the name of that ingredient of their favourite dish or snack, saw a 92% increase YoY, from #107 most viewed to #12 most-viewed for 2023.

r/chipotle is up 45% to #15 most-viewed in the Food & Drink category. With r/tacobell chasing behind, up 48% YoY in views into #21 most-viewed.

r/castiron, a community devoted to cast iron kitchenware, is up 43% YoY with one of the category’s most popular posts from this redditor, who coatedtheir pan 80 times.
