Why you should be chilling your reds this summer

Taylors Wines is encouraging wine drinkers to be chilling their reds in the fridge this summer following the release of four new wines in its Taylors Estate range.

It is a commonly held myth that red wines should be drunk at room temperature, but the ideal serving temperature
for reds actually lies between 12°C and 18°C depending on the variety.

Each release in the new Taylors Estate range comes equipped with an interactive temperature sensor on its back label to make it easier to enjoy the wines as the winemaker intended.

Taylors Wines has been a pioneer in wine temperature education since 2014 when it first introduced its innovative thermo-chromatic ink technology onto its bottle labels.

The suite of new vintage Estate wines include Taylors Estate Label Pinot Noir 2023, Taylors Estate Label Tempranillo 2022, Taylors Estate Label Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 and Taylors Estate Label Shiraz 2021.

“Looking back to 2014 when we first launched our temperature sensors, some people were shocked that a winery was telling them to put their red wines in the fridge,” Taylors Wines Managing Director Mitchell Taylor said.

“Fast forward to today and enjoying a chilled red is as common as riesling vines in the Clare Valley. We as winemakers want every wine we make to be enjoyed at its very best and with an El Niño summer on the horizon, getting the temperature of our wines right while enjoying a picnic or barbecue will be a bit more of a challenge than normal.

“We love the temperature sensors on our Estate labels as they are a fun and interactive tool to educate wine lovers about the recommended serving temperature of wines.”

The thermochromatic ink technology used on the back label of Taylors Estate Range reads the temperature of the bottle to within 1°C and changes colour accordingly. The sensor’s colour corresponds to a temperature scale on the back label, giving users a simple way to know when their wine is too cold, too warm, or just right.

Mitchell Taylor’s top tips for chilling reds

Taylor has a few expert hacks that will empower even the greenest of wine drinkers to chill their reds just right.

Time it perfectly: Taylor says 20 minutes is just about right to get most reds to their best chilled, or 10-15 minutes in an ice bath. Too cool, and your reds come up tight and acidic. Too warm, and the alcohol overpowers all your favourite flavours. It’s about getting that sweet spot.

All reds can be chilled, you just need know your variety: Lighter reds can take more chill easy, which is why they are so popular for the esky. A Shiraz and Cabernet definitely call for a bit of chill during summer – Taylor’s perfect temperature for a heavy read? Somewhere between 16°-18°C.

Find a wine that tells you when it’s ready: Taylors Wines Estate Label has entered the game with a patented temperature-check sensor on the back label of every bottle, allowing you to tell when your wine is chilled to within 1°C of its perfect serving temperature

Taylors Estate range is available from select wine retailers, Taylors Wines’ Clare Valley Cellar Door and www.taylorswines.com.au for RRP $22.
