Australia’s best visitor experiences have been announced at the 2023 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, with Tasmania’s Bangor Vineyard Shed taking out Gold in the Wineries, Distilleries & Breweries category.
Bangor Estate has a long Tasmanian history. Its story started in 1830, when John Dunbabin was convicted of horse stealing and transported to Van Diemen’s Land. He earned his freedom and bought his own land, paving the way for five generations of farming at Bangor. The first vineyard was planted on the property in 2010.
Owners Matt and Vanessa Dunbabin (above) said: This is a huge achievement for our little family business, and we are so proud.
“It’s a real testament to our hard working Bangor team who deliver for our guests day after day. Also to our team on the farm and in the vineyard who look after this special part of the world that is Bangor. To our local community, and suppliers of seafood, cheese, milk, salad, chocolate and so much outstanding produce, this is for you as well.”

“The Tasmanian tourism industry is incredibly supportive and collaborative, and we are fortunate to partner with so many other amazing Tassie operators, including some of the other finalists last night.
“And to our families, thankyou for your support over the Bangor journey. And of course our guests, who visit us from near and far to share our stories, wine, food and view, a huge thanks. We’re 10 years old this year, and excited for the next 10!”
This year’s winners were announced on March 15 at Darwin Convention Centre. The Qantas Australian Tourism Awards recognise and celebrate businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to quality tourism products and experiences. It is the pinnacle event for the tourism industry, with close to 700 representatives from across Australia coming together to celebrate.
“These businesses are continuously developing their products and services to provide exceptional visitor experience,” said Erin McLeod, CEO, Australian Tourism Industry Council.
“This has positioned them well to take out top honours and continue to develop and grow their business further.
“The Quality Tourism Framework not only supports businesses in their efforts for success, but also provides the wider community with peace of mind and confidence when making their travel choices by highlighting reliable, quality tourism products and services through the Quality Tourism Accredited Business brandmark.”
“The Australian Tourism Awards are the tourism industry’s most prestigious awards which showcases innovation and business excellence,” said Shaun de Bruyn, Chairperson, Australian Tourism Awards.
“There was an exceptional level of competition across all categories which demonstrates the dedication tourism operators have to developing extraordinary visitor experiences,” he said.
Silver and Bronze winery and brewery winners
South Australia’s Seppeltsfield Wines took out Silver at the 2023 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, while Victoria’s Billson’s Brewery won Bronze for their outstanding visitor experiences.

Seppeltsfield said: “Thank you to our wonderful team who deliver a truly world class experience for each and every one of our customers!”

“We are beyond proud to have received bronze at the Australian Tourism Awards last night in the category for all Breweries, Wineries & Distilleries,” Billson’s said.
“Just over six years ago when we purchased the brewery, there were always a lot more pigeons inside the building than tourists. We endured countless days where not a single person visited, and on Trip Advisor we were ranked 50th of the 52 ‘things to do’ in Beechworth.
“Since that time, despite the endless challenges thrown at the team, many seemingly insurmountable, they have always found a way to go above & beyond to deliver a memorable experience for our guests.
“All the credit, and all our appreciation, goes to these amazing team members, both past and present, who have given their all to create such a special destination.
“Whilst the hospitality, retail and kitchen superstars are clearly the driving force behind this incredible achievement, there are many other individuals that work tirelessly behind the scenes to make it all possible. This includes the wonderful people in production, safety, marketing, finance, procurement, IT, people & culture, sales, customer service, building, gardening, and the list goes on. We can’t thank you all enough.
“A special shoutout to all of our local trades and suppliers. We are so lucky to have access to some of the world’s best growers, farmers, makers and craftspeople right here in North East Victoria.
“And finally, thank you for following along on social media, visiting the brewery, tasting our drinks and supporting our family business. It has been such a challenging few months for our team and your support has meant more than you could imagine.”
In the Tourism Restaurants & Catering Services category, Gold went to Tasmania’s Grain of the Silos, Silver went to NSW’s Potager and Bronze went to Western Australia’s Cider House.
