Australia’s best value red wines under $20

The Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) has announced its Top 20 Value Wines for 2024, with two Aussie reds priced under $20 being named among the best in the world.

At DWWA, wines priced under £15 a bottle fall into the Value category, with the best of them awarded a Value Gold. Signifying outstanding quality for value, these are ‘everyday’ wines that Decanter believes overdeliver for the price.

DWWA Co-Chair Beth Willard said: “What we’re looking for in the Value category are wines which are absolutely delicious, have great character and identity that when they see that Decanter Gold medal Value sticker on the bottle, the consumers will know that’s a great bottle of wine.”

Wines are awarded a ‘Value Gold’ in the first week of judging, after being blind tasted and confirmed by a regional panel and Co-Chair. In a second round, all confirmed Value Golds are re-tasted again by the Co-Chairs who flag up the very best of them.

Great Western Bare Bones Shiraz 2021, priced at under $15 a bottle, was awarded 95 points.

The judges described it as: “Ripe red fruits, lively white peppercorns and oaky spice with lashings of fresh acidity, a lip-smacking texture and sustaining line of tannin. Long and sumptuous.”

It’s not the wine’s first twirl on the podium, as it was also previously awarded Best Shiraz 2020 Vintage & Younger at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show in 2022.

Robert Oatley Semaphore Series Shiraz 2021, priced under $18 a bottle, also scored 95 points.

The judges described it as: “Brimming with sweet blueberries, blackcurrants and plums which spill over into a silky textured cushion of coffee and chocolate. Long with a minty tang on the finish.”
