Australian Vintage creates AI-inspired wine

Australian Vintage has created Australia’s first AI-curated, human-crafted wine, called CTZN.

Each bottle features a blend of AI selected grape varietals, curated by AI algorithms and brought to life by human winemakers at Australian Vintage.

The concept follows on from French AI wine pioneers Aubert & Mathieu, who produced a wine in 2023 – called The End cuvée – under the instruction of ChatGPT, right down to its name and label.

“We asked it to make an exceptional organic Languedoc wine with the Grenache and Syrah grapes available; we asked its advice on vinification and the blending proportions,” Anthony Aubert told Vitisphere.com.

Now Australian Vintage has debuted the CTZN range with two blends: Quantum Quintessence, a bold and elegant Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, and Ethereal Pulse, a vibrant and delicate Pinot Noir/Grenache/Tempranillo blend.

Australian Vintage CMO Tom Dusseldorp said: “CTZN was created to push the boundaries of how AI can influence the world around us. Most brands using AI have done design, advertising, or packaging. We asked the question what if AI influenced everything?

“When you scan a CTZN bottle you’re immediately immersed in an augmented reality experience that’s as future-forward as the wines. Dreamed up by a collaboration of vintners and AI engineers, SOM, our digital sommelier, is designed to encapsulate the knowledge of a wine expert with the accessibility of a digital assistant to push the boundaries of wine-drinking experiences.”

CTZN’s technology partners Mik Studio said SOM seamlessly merges time-honoured wine varieties with technological evolution and interactive storytelling.

Creative Director Tom Cotton said: “SOM’s persona was meticulously crafted using generative AI and refined by Web 3.0 experts crafting detailed prompts, moving and interacting with users fluidly in Augmented Reality. Transporting you out of
the digital realm and immersing you into the CTZN world, SOM is ready to expertly guide your wine-tasting
like never before using your smartphone as a guide.”

The CTZN AR experience journey includes SOM explaining the science behind the CTZN AI-driven blends Ethereal Pulse and
Quantum Quintessence and how they came to life and guiding consumers through a three-part wine tasting.

CTZN is available to purchase from Dan Murphy’s for RRP$26. Consumers then scan the CTZN bottle to meet AI sommelier Som.
