Diplomático launches month-long rum celebration

Diplomático is extending festivities for World Rum Day this year by offering complimentary cocktails throughout July.

World Rum Day is held annually on the second Saturday in July and honours the rich history and diverse flavours of rum. It has morphed into a whole month of rum appreciation in countries including Australia.

In celebration of Diplomático Maestro Ronero (Rum Master) Nelson Hernandez’s inaugural visit to Australia, 40 of the nation’s best bars will be serving free rum cocktails.

Sydneysiders can choose from the likes of harbourside hotspot Henry Deane or underground oasis Apollonia, while Melbournians can opt for a drink at swanky saloon Magic Mountain or hidden gem Amphora. In Brisbane, locals can enjoy an experimental tipple at Dr Gimlette or heritage hideaway Gresham. And finally, in Perth, participating venues include the beloved dark, moody Foxtrot Unicorn and the heritage rooftop bar at the Mechanic’s Institute.

Each venue has put its own creative spin on classic cocktails using Diplomático rum’s smooth Reserva Exclusiva blend, from a bold rum twist on an Old Fashioned to a ginger-spiked Spiced Mule.

Diplomático Brand Manager, Brown-Forman ANZPI Dany Karpf said: “We are thrilled to be extending our World Rum Day celebrations all month long, by giving Australians the chance to find their new favourite rum cocktail with our first ever complimentary offer.

“This year, World Rum Day is particularly special as we have our Maestro Ronero, Nelson Hernandez visiting our shores for the first time. We can’t wait to show Nelson, who has been passionately crafting Diplomático blends for over three decades, the incredible cocktails Australia’s top bartenders have created to perfectly pair with our rum.”

Drinks Digest sampled a game-changing Old Fashioned featuring Diplomático at Moreno in Sydney’s Martin Place during a masterclass with Hernandez.

The cocktail was paired with its ‘A Taste of Venezuela’ menu, a four-course feast featuring nine dishes, including an indulgent MBS 5+ Black Opal wagyu girello drizzled with a jus enhanced with the sweet, fruity vanilla notes of Diplomático rum’s signature Reserva Exclusiva blend.

A favourite dish was the rum-doused free-range chicken served with hallaquitas – a common Venezuelan holiday dish similar to a tamale – and, to end, a tropical twist on a classic Latin American flan that paired coconut flavours with a rum-infused burnt caramel sauce was sublime.

The Diplomático Rum and Morena’s ‘Taste of Venezuela’ chef’s selection menu is available from 15 July to 12 August, for $150 per person.
