The Aussie suburbs that drink the most Champagne

New data has revealed the postcodes where people drink the most Champagne and you won’t be surprised to hear Sydney’s well-heeled Double Bay made the list.

According to Endeavour Group the top suburbs for bubbly sales are:

  • 2028 (Sydney – Double Bay)
  • 3181 (Melbourne – Prahran/Windsor)
  • 4007 (Brisbane – Ascot, Hamilton)
  • 6010 (Perth – Claremont, Mount Claremont, Swanbourne)
  • 5064 (Adelaide – Glen Osmond, Glenunga, Myrtle Bank, Saint Georges, Urrbrae, Mount Osmond)
  • 7008 (Hobart – New Town, Lenah Valley)

Endeavour Group told the Australian Financial Review that while Champagne remains a “consistent favourite” among older consumers, but has less appeal for younger consumers.

Millennials (born 1981-1996) and Generation Z (born 1997-2012) spend more overall on Champagne than they do on sparkling wine.

However, the biggest driver of growth at Dan Murphy’s and BSW is coming from Gen Z who favour sweet sparklings and prosecco said Endeavour Group head of commercial wine Leigh Firkin.

Endeavour Group said the $35-$50 price band is the fastest-growing price band for sparkling wine, while the $50-$75 price band is the most popular range for champagne.

LVMH says people are too sad to drink Champagne

Luxury giant LVMH saw sales of Champagne fall by 15% in the first half of the year compared to the same period the year prior. And it’s blaming it on unhappy consumers.

LVMH’s Champagne brands include Dom Pérignon, Krug and Mercier.

“Champagne is quite linked with celebration, happiness, et cetera,” Chief Financial Officer Jean-Jacques Guiony said.

“Maybe the current global situation, be it geopolitical or macroeconomic, doesn’t lead people to cheer up and to open bottles of champagne.

“For the second half of the year … I wouldn’t bet on a big improvement in trends, although we expect it to be less bad than the first half of the year, but probably still negative.”

Guiony said the “whole industry is under severe pressure,” particularly in Europe.

The trade association Comité Champagne said total Champagne shipments in the first half of the year were 106.7 million bottles, down 15.2% from the same period last year.

“The sluggish global geopolitical and economic situation and widespread inflation are weighing on household consumption,” said Comité Champagne co-President David Chatillon.
