Angus Barnes steps down as WCA Executive Chair

Wine Communicators of Australia (WCA) Executive Chair Angus Barnes has announced his resignation after 10 years in the role.

Barnes is transitioning to a new role as General Manager of Bunnamagoo Wines, based in Mudgee, NSW.

His connection with WCA began in 2012 when he joined the board. Over the years, he has held various leadership positions, including serving as National Chair from 2015 to 2019. After stepping down briefly in late 2022, Barnes returned as Executive Chair in July 2023, where he successfully managed the dual responsibilities of Executive Officer and National Chair.

In recognition of his contributions, Barnes was awarded Life Membership of the WCA in 2023. During his most recent tenure, he guided the organisation through challenging times within the wine industry, implementing a strategic vision focused on long-term sustainability and relevance.

“I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together,” Barnes said. “The current National Board is the strongest I have seen in my years with WCA, and I feel confident in the organisation’s future. While stepping down is bittersweet, I look forward to supporting WCA as an engaged member, attending events and following its continued success.”

The WCA Board has appointed Lynda Schenk from Adelaide based Marketing Consultancy Purple Giraffe and current Co-Deputy Chair, as National Chair to ensure a seamless transition.

Schenk has been involved with WCA for more eight years and the Australian wine industry for over 25 years. Her contribution to WCA includes, Co-Deputy Chair of the Board since 2020 and as the Executive Officer, 2016 – 2020.

WCA said Schenk deeply committed to WCA’s mission of engaging, inspiring, and advancing excellence within the wine sector. With her extensive industry knowledge and leadership experience, she is well-positioned to guide WCA during this transitional period.

Schenk said: “Angus has been a cornerstone of WCA’s growth and success for over a decade. His leadership, strategic vision, and deep passion for the Australian wine industry have shaped the organisation into what it is today.

“On behalf of the board and members, I want to sincerely thank Angus for his extraordinary dedication and commitment. While he will be deeply missed (both personally and professionally), we are excited for him and know he will continue to make a significant impact in the Australian wine industry.

“Angus may be leaving the role of Executive Chair but he will not be leaving the WCA.  Through Angus’s unwavering dedication and leadership, he leaves the WCA with an exciting foundation of growth, in an industry that is seeking positive news.  The board extends their heartfelt gratitude and looks forward to continuing the legacy he has helped to build.

“We wish him every success in his new role with Bunnamagoo Wines.”

To fill the vacancy left by Schenk’s move to National Chair, Andrew Shedden has been appointed Co-Deputy Chair.  Shedden has extensive wine industry experience and is General Manager, Premium and Luxury at Endeavour Group.

In addition, WCA has recently appointed Alex Gibbs from Smile Marketing as its inaugural Partnerships Consultant. Gibbs brings more a decade of leadership and governance experience and has been involved with WCA as a Non-Executive Director 2014 – current, a previous Treasurer and Company Secretary, and current Co-Deputy Chair since 2020.

WCA’s Events, Marketing and Membership Manager Alex Burgener will continue in her role, providing continuity and serving as a key point of contact for members and stakeholders.

Angus Barnes resignation is effective 12 February 2025.
