Global accolade for $22 Aussie sauvignon blanc

A $22 bottle of South Australian Sauvignon Blanc has taken out a top prize at the 36th annual Mundus Vini Grand International Wine Awards.

Clare Valley family winery Taylors Wines claimed the Trophy for Best of Show Australia White and a Gold Medal for its $22 Estate Label Sauvignon Blanc 2024 at Germany’s most important wine competition, along with three other gold medals across its portfolio.

South Australia continued its streak of success with Barossa Valley-based Schubert Estate taking out the trophy for Best of Show Australian Red for The Lone Goose Shiraz Viognier 2021. South Australian wineries claimed 31 out of the 34 Grand Gold and Gold medals awarded to Australia’s wineries at this year’s Mundus Vini.

Taylors Wines Managing Director Mitchell Taylor said: “Seeing Australian wines continue to succeed globally at awards such as Mundus Vini is incredibly exciting for not only us here at Taylors, but for the greater Australian wine industry.

“Following the China tariffs reopening last year, it’s been a huge year for the Australian wine industry working to reacquaint the market with our wines. Accolades like these help shine the spotlight on our wines globally and provide us the opportunity to speak about our wines and the stories behind them.”

The Mundus Vini Grand International Wine Award is one of Europe’s largest international wine shows. During the six-day tasting, almost 250 wine experts from 55 countries tasted wines from across the world.

In addition to Taylors Best of Show Australia White trophy, the Clare Valley-based winery took home a total of four Gold Medals for its St Andrews Shiraz 2022, Masterstroke Shiraz 2022, Jaraman Shiraz 2023 and Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2024.

Following the lifting of the China tariffs, South Australian wine exports have continued to grow to exceed $500 million, following the previous year which sat at just $2.8 million.

“South Australian wine continues to excel and it’s so exciting to watch both as a producer and also as an appreciator of the fine wine this state has to offer,” said Taylor.

“The variety and level of the wine coming out of South Australia has never been better, and it’s great to see this recognised on the world stage.”

Taylors continued its success in Germany at a neighbouring show, the Berliner Wine Trophy, picking up the Best Producer Still Wine Australia Award. The Clare Valley winery collected eight gold medals at the major competition across its entire portfolio.

Taylors Estate Label Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is available from select fine wine retailers, Taylors Clare Valley Cellar Door and online from www.taylorswines.com.au for RRP $22.
