Mountain Culture opens doors to Hobart brewpub

Blue Mountains-born brewery Mountain Culture Beer Co. has opened its fifth venue – and its first in Tasmania.

The three-time GABS Hottest 100 winner is brewing beers at its new facility in Moonah, while the taproom is located in Hobart’s Murray Street.

Hospitality Group General Manager Bernie Jones said: “Tasmania, especially Hobart, has long been a destination for craft beer in Australia. We’re excited to be jumping in feet first and being a part of that community.

Co-founder and CEO DJ McCready said: “We have always dreamt of bringing Mountain Culture to Hobart. Not just dropping beers off on a pallet, but building a proper home and brewing our beer locally.

“The locals have a real passion for adventure, the outdoors and have a great beer drinking community, which is what we are all about. And opening this taproom gives us the opportunity to engage with the community and not just service them which we are really excited about.”

Mountain Culture was founded by DJ and his wife Harriet McCready in the Blue Mountains town of Katoomba. The couple are both hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts.

“Having a taproom in Hobart is great, any excuse to get down here more, ride my mountain bike, eat the food and drink our beer,” DJ said.

“Sure, I can do these things back home, but Tassie has some of the best mountain biking trails in the world.”

The brewer’s Hobart launch follows Mountain Culture opening its first Melbourne venue in Richmond in July 2025.

Harriet McCready said: “Richmond is a little slice of everything that’s great about Melbourne. Good coffee everywhere, footy just up the road, live music next door, dumplings around the corner…

“The brew pub is arguably one of the most beautiful venues in Melbourne and we are excited to open it up and throw a good old Mountain Culture party!”
