Suntory expands -196 Double Lemon range

Japanese RTD Suntory -196 (Minus 196) Double Lemon has expanded its range in Australia with two new 4.5% and 9% ABV formats.

Launching nationally this month, they both use Suntory’s proprietary Freeze Crush Infusion Technology, which takes a whole fruit, freezes it at -196°C, crushes it and infuses it with vodka and shochu.

-196 is Suntory’s best-selling RTD in Japan and was introduced to Australia – its first international market – in 2021, adapting its taste and packaging design to suit local preferences. It aimed to disrupt the seltzer-obsessed light RTD category with -196 and become a top three brand by 2030.

Its distinctive ‘Extreme Japanese Spirit’ campaign established -196 as the No.3 light RTD in Australia within one year of launch, outselling White Claw and Smirnoff Seltzer in the process.

It was Beam Suntory Australia’s most successful launch ever.

The new 9% ABV variant provides a robust flavour experience that was previously only available overseas. It also capitalises on Australia’s thirst for lemon-flavoured drinks. From citrusy cocktails to lemon canned spritzes, Aussies keep coming back to that sharp, clean flavour profile.

According to the latest data, sales of citrus RTDs are up 54% (Circana Market Moves, 2024; Shopper Intelligence 2024; Circana AU Unweighted MAT to 29/09/24).

Both new Double Lemon variants are on shelves now nationwide across all major retailers. The cans are available in singles and 4-packs, with the 4.5% also available in a 10-pack alongside the original -196 (Minus 196) Double Lemon 6% ABV cans.
