Hugh Jackman sends Aussie pub viral with singalong

Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson made a surprise visit to Australian bar Old Mates Pub in New York City this week for an impromptu singalong with patrons.

The pair play members of a Neil Diamond tribute band in the upcoming movie Song Sung Blue, while the actor is part of a group of Australian investors who own Old Mates pub, including Andy Lee, Hamish Blake, Pat Cummins, Ash Barty and Mick Fanning.

Jackman and Hudson sang three hits from the movie – Sweet Caroline, Forever in Blue Jeans and Crunchy Granola Suite.

During Sweet Caroline, Jackman climbed on top of the bar to belt out the crowd favorite.

Jackman also rang the bell behind the bar to signal a round of free drinks for patrons as silver confetti burst over their heads.  The actor then served beers to fans.

Jackman – along with patrons – posted photos and footage of the festivities on social media. Jackman’s post alone already has more than 45,000 likes – a huge PR boost for the pub.

“Old Mates went off its rocker last night — Hugh Jackman stopped by, Kate Hudson joined him, and next minute the whole pub was singing Neil Diamond at full volume,’ the venue said.

“Then Hugh jumped the bar, rang the bell, and shouted the entire pub like a proper Aussie. Kate absolutely stole the room. A wild, wonderful night with two absolute legends.”

Earlier in the night, Jackman and Hudson accepted the inaugural Gotham Musical Tribute award for their roles in Song Sung Blue as Mike and Claire Sardina, the husband-and-wife musical duo who formed a Neil Diamond tribute band called Lightning & Thunder.

Song Sung Blue opens in theaters later this month.

Old Mates has attracted a parade of stars and famous faces since it opened in March.

Matt Damon made a surprise appearance in October, pulling beers for patrons, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese poured schooners in September.

Jackman (pictured above outside Old Mates with Lee) has 33.8 million Instagram fans and previously raved about the food at Old Mates in a post that said: “‘Old Mates – how Aussie’s eat in NYC. This pub is amazing!”
