Controversial new low-alcohol trend divides Guinness fans

A bar in Dublin has gone viral for promoting “Guinness 60/40”, a beer that is 60% Guinness 0.0 and 40% Guinness, and fans are deeply divided.

Palmerstown House Pub in Dublin described the combo on social media as having “all of the Guinness character, just a little lighter!”

“Great for when you’re in the mood for a pint but with a little less alcohol! Just ask for a ‘60/40,” the pub said.

A spokesman told the Morning Advertiser the concept had received a “great response” from customers and continued to be well sold after a trial run.

“It is an original idea. I don’t think it would be for me. I think most people’s opinion will be it’s all or nothing, it’s either 100 per cent or zero.”

The Guinness 60/40 has since spread to more pubs and while Guinness has yet to make a comment on the latest zebra-striping move, the internet is divided.

The Guinness Guru Darrah Conan told his 160,000+ followers, : “If you want to go out and have 10 pints and only feel like you’ve had four, fair play…The quick reaction from people will always be this is absolutely sacrilegious, this should be illegal. Is it ruining the classic pint of Guinness? Maybe it is, but just don’t order it.

“It is an original idea. I don’t think it would be for me. I think most people’s opinion will be it’s all or nothing, it’s either 100 per cent or zero.”

However, another commenter wrote: “People crying about people wanting to drink a bit less alcohol or maybe have a couple and still be able to drive. Nobody is forcing it on you. Drink what you like, just relax and let others drink what they want too.”

Media strategist Daniel Crocker said: “Guinness 0.0 is already the UK’s number one non-alcoholic beer and 60/40 is just confirmation that ‘zebra-striping‘ is something that Millennials and Gen-Z are open to.

“Guinness 60/40 is proof that alcohol isn’t dead and provides a big opportunity for the brand.”
