The drinks billionaire’s fortune that took the biggest hit in 2025

The Australian has revealed 2025’s winners and losers among Australia’s wealthy individuals and families from The List – Australia’s Richest 250, with drinks billionaire Bruce Mathieson among those taking the biggest hit.

The newspaper reports that Mathieson’s stake in bookmaker Betr led his losses, with his stock fortune in the company down 32%.

“Matt Tripp’s bookmaker Betr spent much of the year trying to executive a merger with rival Pointsbet, only to be thwarted by Japanese giant Mixi. Betr still maintains a big stake in Pointsbet, but its share price has been falling,” The Australian said.

“Billionaire Mathieson is among its top 20 shareholders, and has also seen his stock in Star Entertainment (-31%) and Endeavour Group (-13%) drop this year.”

The Mathieson family is the second-largest shareholder in Star, with Bruce Mathieson Jnr (above) announced as the group’s new CEO earlier this month.

The executive shake-up since then has included chief financial officer Frank Krile resigning, effectively immediately. Group chief operating officer Jeannie Mok has also resigned and will leave at the end of January.

“I would like to thank Frank and Jeannie for their significant contribution to the business and particularly their assistance in progressing our remediation plan. I wish them both well in their future endeavours,” Mathieson Jr said in a statement.

In August, Mathieson Jr told the Australian Financial Review: “I’m extremely optimistic about Star. It’s very clear what Star has done wrong, but they’ve got to turn the page and start driving the business. I’m very confident and very excited about having a role in doing that.

“History will say our family … we roll up our sleeves and get into it. We’re used to winning, not losing.”

Mathieson Snr is also optimistic about the impact incoming CEO Jayne Hrdlicka will have on Endeavour Group.

“We’ve worked with Jane before when she was at Woolies,” he told the AFR earlier this year. “Hopefully, Jayne can straighten it right up. She’s got amazing assets to do it, and I’m sure it’ll go an awful lot better under her guidance than what was done beforehand.”
