Beer cocktails—or beertails— are trending right now as Australia’s perfect summer drink. And it makes sense given that Australia is renowned as a beer-loving nation, while cocktail sales are going through the roof.
The concept of beertails may sound a little bizarre, but according to Beer Cartel they’re about to become your secret weapon, blending all the refreshment you want from a cold beer with some fun, clever twists.
Think the Michelada (a twist on a Bloody Mary, switching vodka for lager), Largerita (a variation of a Margarita with Mexican lager, tequila, lime juice and Cointreau with a salt for rim), Beermosa (beer and orange juice or Grand Marnier), Black Velvet (beer and Champagne), Campari IPA Spritz (Campari and Indian Pale Ale) and Stout Fellow (a beery Espresso Martini, with stout, dark rum, coffee liqueur and dark crème de cacao).
And let’s not forget the British classic the Shandy (beer and lemonade).
Meanwhile Mike Bennie over at Delicious reckons his favourite new take on hybrid drinks is a quirky American take on an Aperol spritz.
“Known as the Spaghett, this is a blend of lager with Aperol, served over ice and spiked with a squeeze of lime,” he said.
“It’s a good-times combo of tangy, refreshing and cooling, with a marriage of citrussy sweetness and malty bitterness. Ditch the prosecco and away you go with your new drink of summer.”

It’s also been dubbed the “recession Aperol Spritz” and sales are going through the roof in the United States – data from Square show that orders for Spaghetts in the first half of 2025 were up by 65% from the previous year, and since 2022 orders are up by 1000%.

According to Beer Cartel, picking the right beer can totally change your cocktail game. Here are their tips:
Wheat Beers & Hefeweizens: These are light, crisp, and have a hint of fruitiness. They mix really well with citrus or tropical flavours and don’t take over the whole drink. On a hot day, they’re perfect.
Pale Ales & IPAs: Hoppy beers like these add real depth and a little bitterness, which is awesome if you balance them with sweet or sour ingredients. If you want your cocktail to go down easy, stick with session IPAs.
Lagers & Pilsners: When you want something simple and that won’t clash with other flavours, lagers and pilsners are the way to go. They’re clean, bubbly, and let your mixers do their thing.
Fruit Beers: These already have a lot of flavour, so they’re great for instantly jazzing up a cocktail. Pair them with fresh fruit or herbs, and you’re set.
Sours & Goses: Tart and tangy, sours and goses bring a little sophistication to the mix. They play well with sweet liqueurs and fruit.
