Sydney pasta maven Paola Toppi has opened an intimate new venue in Potts Point that pairs some of her most-loved recipes with Italian wines and Maybe Sammy cocktails.
Unlike Toppi’s previous restaurants, Sydney institution Machiavelli and Bar M, her new venture – Pasta Shop – takes a more relaxed and casual approach to dining.
The 35-seat venue features walnut timber tables paired with terracotta directors’ chairs, while every item on the menu is under $30, including her iconic spaghetti Machiavelli and fusilli crab.
Toppi said: “People are doing it tough. Pasta is for everyone, it was never meant to be exclusive. In Italy, it’s a staple that people of all walks of life can afford to eat everyday.”
There are 11 artisanal pastas to choose from on the menu, ranging from her 40-year-old spaghetti Machiavelli, to spicy rigatoni alla vodka, gnocchi gorgonzola and a classic lasagne.
“We’re still using the premium ingredients we’ve always been known for, but by creating a more relaxed dining experience, people are able to enjoy them for less,” Toppi said.

The Steel and Stitch-designed space features a striking terracotta red wall, lemon trees and mossy greenery give the cosy outdoor courtyard an oasis-like atmosphere, while the adjacent takeaway window – providing an uninterrupted view into the kitchen – is a constant hub of activity.
Everything on Pasta Shop’s menu can also be delivered to homes in the Eastern Suburbs. Toppi has spent the past two years creating a new custom-designed takeaway bowl that ensures the pasta doesn’t overcook while it’s in transit.
“People don’t always want to eat out, but they still want to be able to order a quality pasta and a bottle of wine they can enjoy from the comfort of their own home,” she said. “It’s about bringing the best of Italy to everyone.”
In addition to the pastas, Pasta Shop menu also features a homemade polpette con sugo, as well as a selection of salads, house-made focaccia and classic desserts like tiramisu and cannoli.

The drinks list is short, sharp and tasty, with a monthly rotating list of quality Italian wines that pair with the pastas, ready-to-pour Maybe Sammy negronis and margaritas, Sardinian beer and traditional Italian soft drinks, with BYO also available.
Pasta Shop is located on the ground floor of 37 Bayswater Rd, Potts Point.
