TWE mixes wine with cola in new release

Treasury Wine Estates has released a new wine and cola product called Calimocho under its 19 Crimes label.

Consumers are continuing to embrace spritz style and lighter wine occasions, with 19 Crimes Calimocho reimagining the classic Spanish Kalimotxo cocktail, which mixes equal parts red wine and cola.

The unexpected combination originated in the 1920s, in the Old Port area of Algorta, a coastal town in the Basque region of Spain.

The story goes that organisers of a festival had ordered thousands of litres of wine with an unpleasant taste and were looking for way to salvage the situation. They served it with Coca-Cola and the crowd loved it. The drink was named after one of the festival organisers, who was called Kalimero, or “Kali” for short, together with the Basque word for ugly, ‘motxo’. The popular drink is often also known as Calimocho.

Here’s what the tasting notes for TWE’s version of Calimocho have to say: “Shiraz and cola soda flavour, a pairing that sounds criminal but tastes incredible. Calimocho Cola, delivers juicy berry fruit, a spark of ginger heat and a kick of pepper, all balanced by bright acidity that keeps every sip fresh. It’s rich, bold and just the right amount of rebellious. Serve it over ice or pour it straight from the bottle when you’re ready to taste how good breaking the rules can be.”

Calimocho is available at Dan Murphy’s and BWS for around $8.99 for a 750ml bottle (ABV 9%)
