Sydney’s American-inspired steakhouse, The Gidley, is presenting a month-long showcase celebrating the diversity and quality of California’s wine regions.

California Wines is partnering with the venue throughout July to show the state’s wine story extends beyond iconic wine regions such as Napa Valley and Sonoma County. Producing more than 80 per cent of all American wine, the state is home to a diverse collection of coastal, mountain and inland wine regions.

California Wines’ Joint Regional Director for North Asia and Australasia Hiro Tejima said: “Australian wine drinkers may know California for certain expressions of Cabernet Sauvignon, but that’s only a fraction of what the Golden State has to offer.

“California is one of the most dynamic wine producing regions in the world, with everything from cool-climate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to age-worthy reds including Cinsault and Zinfandel from historic old-vine vineyards.

“This partnership with The Gidley provides a fitting opportunity for Sydneysiders to discover a wider range of Californian wine through a carefully curated selection of producers and regions.”

Curated by The Gidley’s Head Sommelier Emma Chappell, there are 31 Californian wines available by the bottle, with seven new wines not already on The Gidley menu, exclusively available for the duration of the showcase.

Across the restaurant and lounge, the venue is also offering a dedicated California by-the-glass program featuring seven wines, allowing guests to explore a range of regions and styles without committing to a full bottle.

Chappell said: “When curating this list, I wanted to showcase both the wines people expect from California and the wines they may never have encountered before. Of course, there are iconic Cabernet Sauvs and Chardonnays, but there are also varieties like Trousseau and Syrah, even sparkling, that demonstrate just how diverse and exciting California has become.

“The by-the-glass program allows guests to explore multiple regions and styles in a single visit, which is something very few wine lists can offer.”

To complement the wine program, The Gidley Lounge will offer a Pastrami Beef Rib with Cabernet Glaze and Pickled Cucumber for the duration of the promotion. Rich, smoky and deeply savoury, the dish has been designed specifically to pair with a glass of California Cabernet Sauvignon.
