The Glendronach is marking its 200th anniversary this year with the release of The Glendronach Boynsmill House Edition.

James Allardice founded The Glendronach on the Boynsmill Estate in the Scottish Highlands in 1826. Nestled within the ‘Valley of the Brambles’, Allardice’s vision for the distillery was to unite the robust character of highland spirit with the exquisite influence of Spanish sherry casks. 

Allardice was renowned for hosting distinguished guests, with his charisma and wit becoming part of the brand’s enduring legacy. Paying tribute to his convivial spirt and the distillery’s rich heritage, Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie has created a 14-year-old single malt limited edition that’s designed to be savoured and shared with friends. 

Dr Barrie carefully selected number of claret red wine casks to complement the whisky’s rich and robust character. This distinctive third cask style adds vibrant layers of red berry fruit and elegant complexity, paying homage to the wines that would once have graced the tables of Allardice’s celebrated gatherings.

Drinks Digest was among the first to try The Glendronach Boynsmill House Edition this week, with Dr Barrie leading a virtual tasting. Her passion for The Glendronach and sheer bliss on her face as she sipped the 14-year-old expression were an inspiring way to experience the new release.

Dr Barrie said it was the pinnacle of her career to be working with The Glendronach, comparing the characteristics of its whisky to an adagio that builds to a crescendo.

“Other whiskies don’t crescendo,” she said.

“In this expression, I find the character that has long made The Glendronach so distinctive: plush ripe malt, Highland toffee, bramble and raisin layered with subtle notes of stone fruit and plum, leading to a mellow, velvety finish. It is a richly rewarding whisky that honours the enduring character of the Valley of the Brambles while celebrating a remarkable moment in our history.”

The whisky has a bold ABV of 46.8%, expertly balanced by a rich palate of dried fruits and warm caramel notes, with a long, elegant finish.
