Three new Glenglassaugh expressions will be available in Australia from September 2023, introducing whisky lovers to the distillery’s new portfolio and design direction.
The new portfolio includes a flagship 12 Year Old Single Malt, plus Sandend and Portsoy.
The overall artistic direction for their bottle designs takes inspiration from rippling sand tide at Sandend Bay where the whiskies are produced, with touches of colour inspired by sea glass.
Brown-Forman Single Malts Master Blender Rachel Barrie recently introduced the trio of expressions to Sydney whisky writers via Zoom call, while standing on a beach near the distillery. The atmospheric location coupled with inspired pairings such as chunks of fresh pineapple with the Sandend expression elevated the tasting experience.
The whiskies also lend themselves to mixing in cocktails such as the whisky sours that were served prior to the tasting.
“The new portfolio brings together all the key elements of Glenglassaugh’s spirit,” she said.
“Inspired by its truly unique coastal location, the new expressions transport us to a place where the spirit is awakened and soul invigorated, inviting us to stop, take a breath and appreciate our surroundings.
“To taste Glenglassaugh Single Malt is to experience the coastal influence of Sandend Bay and the ancient harbour towns nearby. Shaped by the coalescence of land and sea, the senses are awakened by the imposing yet calming crash of waves and the sweet smell of gorse in the air.”
Barrie also has a deep personal connection to the area, having grown up in rural Aberdeenshire.
“Glenglassaugh is delicious – like sea salted caramel and it reminds me of learning to surf on the waves below the distillery as a child,” she explained.
Her Sandend whisky, inspired by the crescent beach of Sandend Bay, is matured in bourbon, sherry and manzanilla casks bringing luscious waves of tropical sweetness with a touch of sea-salt.
Portsoy takes its name from the neighbouring harbour village, reflects the bold and deeply maritime flavour of this richly peated single malt, matured in sherry, bourbon and port casks.
The three new expressions will be available nationwide from September 2023 at specialist whisky stockists for RRP $110 for the 12 Year Old, $120 for Sandend and $132 for Portsoy.
