Iconic Hunter Valley vigneron Tyrrell’s Wines continues to reaffirm its reputation as the best Semillon producer in the world, taking out four trophies including Best White Wine of Show at the Hunter Valley Wine Show.
Tyrrell’s Semillon Vat 1 is Australia’s most awarded white wine and Tyrrell’s said the wins at the Hunter Valley Wine Show were a “triumph of Semillon as a varietal”.
Vat 1 Semillon has been grown in the Hunter for decades. It is only ever made from the best blocks on the Tyrrell’s Ashman’s property, with the oldest plantings being from 1908.

“We are honoured and overjoyed to share that Tyrrell’s Semillons won four Trophies at the 2023 PKF Hunter Valley Wine Show, including Best White Wine of Show,” Tyrrell’s said.
“Tyrrell’s has won Best White Wine of Show seven out of the last 10 years, which is itself an amazing achievement.
“Our Winemaker’s Selection 2013 Vat 1 Semillon dominated this year’s awards ceremony, taking home the following three trophies: Best Two-Year-Old and Older Semillon, Best Semillon and Best White Wine of Show.
“In addition, our 2013 Single Vineyard Belford Semillon was awarded the trophy for Best Museum White Wine.”

According to James Halliday’s Wine Companion, the Hunter Valley produces the world’s best semillon.
“You wouldn’t think the heat and humidity of the Hunter would be a fit for semillon,” it said.
“Still, it produces what is widely known as the best dry style on the planet – a true wonder of the wine world. There are a few factors responsible for this quality, including a unique combination of climatic factors, old-vine sites, and meticulous winemaking, with the area’s historic wineries incredibly proud of their work with the variety.
“The Hunter is best known for its unoaked young semillon wines that undergo a magical transformation with age, maturing into rich, toasty styles that still retain their brightness and fruit purity, making them captivatingly complex.”
