Sydney pubs launch wine squealers

Two Sydney pubs and their sister wine bar are selling Aussie-first one-litre wine squealers just in time for the festive season.

The one litre takeaway tap wine bottles are designed to allow patrons to enjoy their favourite drops and help the environment at the same time.

Solotel pubs the Erko and Abercrombie  – plus wine bar and shop Lil Sis  – are now slinging Wine Squealers. Customers can fill custom bottles with Pinot Grigio, Rose or Grenache (as well as a special skin contact wine available at the Abercrombie) from the bar taps for just $25, plus bring the bottle back for a refill and pay just $20 for their next tipple.

Solotel has partnered with Aussie wine producer Alpha Box & Dice on the project, to encourage sustainability through minimising glass and cardboard usage. By kegging the wine, each venue is diverting more than 5000 bottles from landfill or recycling each year. What many people might not know is, the tap wine system also keeps the wine fresher for longer, ensuring every drop poured from the tap tastes like a freshly opened bottle.

“When we opened the Abercrombie we started to explore how we could get high-quality, super interesting wines on tap,” explained Solotel Group Bars Manager Reece Griffiths.

“We wanted wines we love with high drinkability in that space. We have worked with Alpha Box & Dice for years, so we started working together to figure out how we could get the best wine we could in the glass, with zero waste.

“It’s super exciting for us. It can be really difficult to create meaningful action in this space, so to have something we can see direct results from is epic.”

Griffith said changing the public perception of tap wine was another goal for the group.

“Historically a lot of tap wine was low-quality and high-volume,” Griffith said.

“So there is still an element of education, but changing perceptions is our goal. There are so many incredible producers moving into keg wine, that the future is so exciting. We just need to get these wines in front of people so they can see how awesome they are.”
