Fair Trading probe closes online drinks retailer

One of NSW’s most complained about online alcohol retailers has shut down its two websites following Newscorp and NSW Fair Trading launching investigations into the business.

Owner Vihang Gandhi disabled both liquorkart.com.au and boozetown.com.au earlier this week.

The LiquorKart website topped NSW Fair Trading’s complaints register in December and was ranked second in January. Complaints included that the business had failed to fulfil orders or provide refunds.

LiquorKart describes itself on LinkedIn as “one of Australia’s leading online Alcohol marketplaces and one of the fastest-growing start-ups. Stocking more than 6000+ products from local and international beers, spirits, ciders, premix drinks, and bar accessories for consumers to choose from, we have partnered with Australia’s finest liquor boutiques that enable us to house premium liquors exclusive to us.”

Gandhi is the sole director of the company behind Boozetown, SYMG Group, which was registered in November 2023.

“This new business trader is under investigation by NSW Fair Trading,” a Department of Fair Trading spokesperson told The Telegraph.

“As the investigation is ongoing, further comment is not available at this time. Consumers who experience any issues with this trader are encouraged to contact NSW Fair Trading on 13 32 20,” she said.

LiquorKart and Boozetown have the same registered address in southwest Sydney and share a NSW liquor licence. There are a huge number of warnings from consumers at Product Review in addition to 259 official complaints to Fair Trading.

“We have taken down the website for now,” Gandhi told Newscorp.

“Regarding LiquorKart’s pending refunds, we are working on it and we assure that each and every customer will get their stock or refund.

Gandhi said he didn’t know how many incomplete orders LiquorKart had to resolve and said he was still working on it and updating ACCC and Fair Trading.

An ACCC spokeswoman said it “does not comment on any current or potential investigations.”
