Champagne cork interrupts Wimbledon final

The Wimbledon men’s singles final was interrupted over the weekend by a Champagne cork landing at the feet of one of the players.

The match between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz saw a Champagne Lanson cork popped by a spectator land at Sinner’s feet, just as the Italian was about to deliver his serve.

Sinner handed the cork to a ball girl, while an official admonished over the loudspeaker: “Ladies and gentlemen, as a courtesy to both players, please do not pop Champagne corks just as the players are about to serve”.

“The most Wimbledon warning you’ve ever heard,” one broadcaster said.

Alcaraz held up his arms in annoyance during the incident and the 15,000 crowd on Centre Court jeered the guilty popper. However, Sinner was unrattled by the incident and went on to win his first Wimbledon championship.

Champagne Lanson has been the Official Champagne of Wimbledon for more than 20 years, with a range of bottlings available to spectators at this year’s tournament, starting with the Lanson Champagne Brut Le Black Creation NV, priced at $197, while Lanson’s Brut 2013 was priced at $256.

Tickets for the Wimbledon men’s singles final were selling for more than $40,000 on some resale websites, so what’s another $256 for a bottle of bubbles? Small change!

Wimbledon spectators are allowed to bring bottles of Champagne to their seats during matches, as long as they don’t pop the corks during play.

During his post-match on-court interview Sinner joked: “Only here at Wimbledon [would that happen], but that’s exactly why we love playing here. It’s a very expensive tournament, you know.”
