Twenty six years ago on October 25, 1999, Matthew McConaughey made headlines around the world during an incident involving the bongos, the police and zero clothing.
McConaughey, then 29, had gone to a Texas Longhorns football game and spent the rest of the weekend partying. Early on the Monday morning he decided to “wind down” with some marijuana and his bongos.
In his 2020 memoir Greenlights he recalled: “What I didn’t know was that while I was banging away in my bliss, two Austin policemen also thought it was time to barge into my house unannounced, wrestle me to the ground with nightsticks, handcuff me and pin me to the floor.”
When an officer told him he was also being charged with resisting arrest, he replied: “You broke in my house! F— yeah, I resisted.”
Afterwards his mother said: “I know what you were doing last night playing bongos, smoking that funny stuff in your birthday suit, and you’ve done it many times before and I know you’re going to do it again.”

To celebrate the anniversary of his first and last run-in with the law, the actor has released a dramatic reading of the police report complete with Steve ZirnKilton, the voice of Law and Order.
The spot embraces the playful, irreverent spirit behind the tequila brand the actor launched with his wife – Pantalones – and its catchphrase: The Official Tequila of Marching to Your Own Beat.
Alongside this new video from the McConaugheys, the brand is commemorating the anniversary of the iconic bongo event with a signature cocktail – Pantsless & Famous (a riff on the classic cocktail Naked & Famous).
