Ryan Reynolds plans Wrexham Lager super brewery

Plans have been submitted to Wrexham Council to build a new brewery, taproom and museum for Wrexham Lager.

The brewery will be located within a new transport hub called Wrexham Gateway, which will front onto Wrexham General Station and include a public plaza.

The proposed brewery site is adjacent to Wrexham AFC, which has been co-owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac – formerly McElhenney – since 2020. Reynolds and Mac also became co-owners of Wrexham Lager a year ago.

The pair said they invested in the brewery after discovering “the connection between club and community, the intricacies of the offside rule and the occasional need for beer – especially after finance meetings”.

“Wrexham Lager has a 140-year-old recipe and a storied history and we’re excited to help write its next chapter,” they added.

The pair’s involvement in the town has given a huge boost to tourism in the region, with more than two million people visiting Wrexham last year.

Since buying Wrexham AFC, the club has risen to England’s second football tier. The club also stars in a hit Disney+ documentary series Welcome to Wrexham

Wrexham Council said the county has seen a 20% growth in visitor numbers year-on-year as a result.

Wrexham Lager is one of the oldest lager brands in the world, with a history back to 1882. Its beer was even infamously served on board the Titanic.

The lager was launched in Australia in September 2024, with long-term order agreements secured with BWS and Dan Murphy’s through Hawkesbury Brewing Co.
