KFC is opening a wine bar

This is genius: KFC and French wine brand La Vieille Ferme are opening a pop-up bar in London called Coq au Vin, pairing fried chicken with wine.

Running at at Shoreditch bar called Kachette Annex from 28-31 August, the experiential marketing pop-up will match Popcorn Chicken with sparkling rosé, Hot Wings with Famille Perrin’s La Vieille Ferme Rouge, and Original Recipe Tenders with rosé or blanc.

KFC UK & Ireland Fame & Partnerships Lead Phoebe Syms said: “We’re iconic fried chicken. They’re the iconic Chicken Wine. Coq au Vin is one of those partnerships that just makes sense,” said

Famille Perrin UK managing director Andrew Bayley said: “Bringing the nation’s favourites together in a unique juxtaposition is all about celebrating the unexpected. Coq au Vin is a playful take on the principle that great wine and great food don’t have to follow the rules…a pop-up collaboration that makes customers cross the road.”

It’s a smart partnership, with analysis by Roy Morgan showing Millennials, born from 1980-1995 and now aged from 30-45 years old, are the biggest customers of three of the leading fast-food outlets – McDonald’s, KFC and Hungry Jack’s – narrowly ahead of the younger Generation Z (aged from 15-30).

Meanwhile, La Vieille Ferme has become Gen Z’s favourite wine due to its TikTok popularity and the fact its well priced with a chook on the label.

As Delicious noted back in 2024: “La Vieille Ferme Rosé, or as the internet likes to call it, ‘Chicken Wine’, has clucked its way into the hearts of wine drinkers everywhere – especially on TikTok. This French rosé is cheap, cheerful, and the kind of drink that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

“Chicken Wine isn’t just about what’s in the bottle. It’s about the vibe. It’s the kind of wine that’s fine to pair with a three-course meal or a bucket of KFC. Sure, it may be bogan-coded but people love it for exactly that reason. It’s the everyman’s (or everywoman’s) rosé—fancy enough to impress your friends, but down-to-earth enough that you don’t feel like you’re trying too hard.”

According to WGSN (the global authority on consumer trend forecasting that acquired IWSR in 2025), Gen Z consumes alcohol differently than previous generations.

WGSN Director of Food & Drink Jennifer Creevy said: “This generation thrives on discovery. And in the face of the stress and challenges across the world, this often plays out with fun flavours, mash-ups and multi-sensorial takes. The key is to make it playful, not too serious, and deliver newness through evolving iterations.”
