Victoria’s favourite beers in 2020

Dan Murphy’s sales data has revealed Victoria’s favourite beers in the last 12 months, with Aussie-made brews top of the list.

The brewery names that featured most on the list were Mountain Goat, Carlton Draught, Stone & Wood and Stomping Ground.

Dan Murphy’s beer merchandise manager Jarrod Holt said: “In the last year, and especially since COVID, we’ve seen an increasing number of customers choose Australian-made beers.”

Data from IRI backs up the enthusiasm for local brands. During the 12 months to November 2020, the craft segment grew 42.8% in litres, with 43.6% in sales growth.

Corona beer shortage

However, there was an exception … drinkers in the Melbourne CBD preferred Corona, Asahi, Heineken and Sol.

Speaking of Corona, there’s been a nationwide shortage of Corona Extra Dry since the beginning of in November. It led to buying limits being imposed for both customers and retailers.

Some wholesalers capped retailers at 10 cases, while bottle shops placed a limit of two cases per customer.

Corona brand manager Shencina Conway told News Corp: “Demand for several of our most well-known beers has been strong over the past few months as consumers turn to the familiar, and Corona beer is no exception.”

A CUB spokesman added: “The shortages are due to a recent increase in demand along with supply issues stemming from COVID-19. These include production delays in Mexico, shipping congestion and issues at Australian ports.”

Burnley Brewing co-owner Phil Gijsbers said he thought the shortage was due to Aussie larrikinism: “My feeling (behind the shortage) is 20 million people wanted to take the mickey and have a bit of a laugh about something this year. That’s what beer drinkers do, we’re lighthearted and don’t take things too seriously.”

It’s been a similar story in the UK, where Corona Extra was among the beers to experience the largest growth in the 52 weeks to September 5. Supermarket sales of the Mexican beer rose £68m on 2019, an increase of 40%, making it the 10th fastest-growing grocery product.
