Penfolds releases 2025 Collection

Penfolds has unveiled its 2025 Collection – a line-up of 24 wines from Australia, the United States, France and China, including the highly anticipated 2021 Penfolds Grange.

The 2021 Penfolds Grange (RRP $1000) has already received perfect scores from global wine critics Ken Gargett and Matthew Jukes.

Penfolds Chief Winemaker Peter Gago said: “If this is your first sip of Grange, then expect the unexpected. A style, a blend an experience. Buoyant, layered, accessible.

“This Grange will not disappoint. In about 30 years we may be more confidently able to tell you just how it ranks!”

Gago also reflected on Penfolds’ legacy and how important trial and experimentation continue to be.

“Some of our most revered wines started life as experiments, including Grange (1951 experimental), which almost 75 years later, has gone on to become one of the world’s most respected fine wines.” he said.

“Today, trial and experimentation remain at the heart of Penfolds, particularly in Bordeaux, where our team on the ground in France continue to evolve and finesse our French Winemaking Trial, this year releasing 2022 FWT 585 Cabernet Merlot Petit Verdot and introducing its sibling, 2022 FWT 543 Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah.”

The union of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz is deeply woven into the Penfolds story, defining some of the winemakers’ most notable wines, including Bin 389, Bin 600, Bin 180 (the limited-release anniversary wine to celebrate Penfolds 180 years), and Superblend 802 A and Superblend 802 B.

“It works. Using a 65-year-old Bin 389 style template, the immediate acceptance of the inaugural 2018 Bin 600 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz from California – championed by winemakers, Steph Dutton and Andrew Balwin – emboldened our French team. Not to be outdone, winemaker Shauna Bastow has propelled a French trialling first, the 2022 FWT 543 Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah, into this Collection,” Gago said.

“Over time, and with brave sourcing and winemaking ambition, we await its ascent to Bin status.”

FWT 543 Cabernet Sauvignon Syrah 2022 (RRP $100) reimagines the quintessentially Australian blend as a Vin de France. Structural Cabernet Sauvignon and highly textural Syrah combine to create a style that Gago said is familiar yet altogether different, showcasing traditional elements with an entirely modern approach.
